Domain Backordering: What It Is and How It Works

Domain Backordering: What It Is and How It Works

If a domain you want is already registered, your options are limited: negotiate a private purchase, or place a backorder and hope the current owner lets it expire. Domain backordering is the second path, and it can be a cheap way to acquire a great name.

What Is Domain Backordering?

A backorder is a service that attempts to register a domain the moment it drops from the registry. You place a backorder with a service like DropCatch, SnapNames, or Pool.com. If the service catches the domain, you get it (sometimes after a private auction among backorder holders).

How Backordering Works

  1. You place a backorder on a specific domain.
  2. The backorder service monitors the registry for the drop.
  3. The service tries to register it the moment it drops. Multiple services often compete, and the registrar with the best drop-catch infrastructure usually wins.
  4. If only one person backordered it, it is yours at the backorder price.
  5. If several backordered it through the same service, you enter a private auction.

When Backordering Makes Sense

Backordering is best when:

  • The current owner is unlikely to renew (e.g. a parked name, an abandoned business).
  • You can wait months with no guarantee.
  • The name is not currently listed for sale at a reasonable price.

When Backordering Does Not Make Sense

Avoid backordering when:

  • The domain is on a registrar that retains expiring names (some registrars hold drops in-house).
  • The current owner has a record of renewing all names.
  • You need the domain in a defined timeframe.

The Cost of Backordering

  • DropCatch, SnapNames, and similar services charge $20 to $80 per backorder, often refunded if the catch fails.
  • If a domain is caught and goes to private auction, prices can run from $100 to several thousand dollars depending on competition.

Backordering vs. Negotiation

Backordering is a chance-based strategy. If you need a specific domain within 30 days, do not rely on backordering. Instead, negotiate the purchase through SnapDomains, or browse domain auctions for similar names.

Next Steps

If a backorder is not realistic for your timeframe, SnapDomains can negotiate the purchase of an already-registered domain for a flat fee. Read how to buy a domain name for the full picture.
